Disbelief

Laverne Zabieski’s new book of poems, Disbelief, is perfectly titled. I was flat-out stunned after reading it. I sat in my own version of disbelief. How did she manage to write it in the first place? Zabielski writes straightforwardly and courageously about her family's pain starting with ancestors, parents and her own complex blended family. Centering the book are multiple poems about her son’s ending his life after living as a paraplegic for two decades. I don't know if it was pain from your wound /or my womb remembering, she writes. Zabielski tells the story in stages, careful not to let the details overwhelm. In an arresting poem, Art Halted, Zabielski concludes: I have not given up on disbelief/catching our shadow on the pavement/ as his wheels carry him across the/parking lot/me pushing. Indeed, Zabielski’s art hasn't yet halted. I don't think it ever will.
